Switzerland has officially joined the EuRIS (European River Information System) network by signing the European Corridor Management Agreement (ECMA) through Port of Switzerland. This expands EuRIS coverage to all Rhine waterway sections, providing real-time navigation and transport information to improve safety, efficiency, and voyage planning across Europe’s inland waterways.
Contribution to the Inland Water Transport Digitalisation Vision and RIS Network Management
The accession of Switzerland ensures that all Rhine waterway sections are fully integrated into a centralised information architecture. This geographical expansion directly supports the strategic milestone defined in the IWT Digitalisation Vision, which targets the implementation of a comprehensive RIS Network Management concept by 2035 as one of guiding directions for the digitalisation future of the sector.
Alignment with the Revised RIS Directive and the “European RIS Environment”
Switzerland’s inclusion also operationalises key components of the revised RIS Directive (EU) 2025/2482. The EuRIS platform serves as the foundational cornerstone of the “European RIS Environment“, an electronic, single-point-of-access digital backbone that centralises fairway, infrastructure, and traffic related data. By integrating Switzerland and its data, this ensures seamless cross-border data synchronisation across the interconnected European inland waterway network.
By connecting current cross-border deployments and developments with the legislative obligations of the revised EU regulatory framework, the DiVINE project emphasises that Switzerland’s integration accelerates the establishment of a harmonised, safe, and digitally unified European inland waterway network, ultimately driving efficiency and modernisation across the entire navigation sector.
